The Alexander Technique is an education of both the mind and the body that addresses the habitual patterns of behavior and thought that interfere with our quality of life.  People of all ages and abilities have studied the technique and discovered a better way of functioning, relief from pain and improvement in skill.

Origin:

The Alexander Technique was developed by F. M. Alexander (1869-1955), a young Australian actor who developed chronic hoarseness that threatened his ability to continue his career.  Unable to find help for his condition he began to study his own movement, discovered habits that were creating and contributing to his problem, and succeeded in restoring his voice.

His observations led him to the discovery of a relationship between the head, neck and back that influenced posture, breath and movement.  He named this the “primary control” and developed a technique in the early years of the twentieth century to teach his knowledge to others.  His first teacher training course was started in London, England in 1931.  Today his Technique is taught to people around the world.

Benefits:

There are many benefits to the Alexander Technique.  Most students initially report feeling less tension, ease in movement and relief from tension related pain.  As one’s overall condition improves many specific symptoms, aches and pains begin to disappear.  Because the Technique addresses overall use performers find it helpful in improving their skill levels.
